2 August 1873: San Francisco's cable car makes its first run

On 2 August 1873, Andrew Hallidie tested the first cable car on Clay Street in San Francisco. Cars gripped a moving cable under the street, which pulled them up steep hills that horses struggled with. San Francisco's cable cars still run today, a symbol of the city.
