In 60 words

On 8 December 1864, the Clifton Suspension Bridge opened across the Avon Gorge in Bristol, England. It was based on a design by the engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who died before it was finished. Still in daily use, it is one of the most famous bridges of the 19th century.
