31 July 1790: The first US patent is granted

On 31 July 1790, Samuel Hopkins received the first patent issued under the new US patent law, for an improved way of making potash, used in soap and fertiliser. It was signed by President George Washington. The US Patent Office has since granted more than 12 million patents.
