23 May 1995: The Java programming language is released

On 23 May 1995, Sun Microsystems publicly released Java, a programming language designed so that the same program could run on any kind of computer. Created by a team led by James Gosling, it became one of the world's most used languages, powering apps, websites and Android phones.
