3 May 1978: The first spam email is sent

On 3 May 1978, a marketing manager at the computer company DEC sent an advertising message to about 400 users of ARPANET, the forerunner of the internet. Many recipients complained. It is remembered as the first spam email. Today spam makes up a large share of all email sent.
