In 60 words

On 29 November 1929, the American aviator Richard Byrd and his crew flew over the South Pole in a Ford Trimotor aircraft named Floyd Bennett. To clear the high mountains on the way, they threw supplies overboard to lighten the plane. The round trip from their Antarctic base took about 19 hours.
