Brunel's SS Great Britain is launched
On 19 July 1843, the SS Great Britain, designed by the engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, was floated out in Bristol. It was the first large ocean-going ship with an iron hull and a screw propeller, the design almost all ships use today. Restored, it is now a museum in Bristol.
