A meteor explodes over Chelyabinsk
On 15 February 2013, a space rock about 20 m wide exploded in the sky over Chelyabinsk in Russia, shining brighter than the Sun. Its shock wave shattered windows across the city and injured about 1,500 people, mostly from flying glass. It was the largest such event recorded in more than a century.

India launches its first mission to Mars
On 5 November 2013, India launched the Mars Orbiter Mission, also called Mangalyaan. It reached Mars orbit in September 2014, making India the first Asian nation to reach Mars and the first country to succeed on its first attempt. The mission cost less than many Hollywood films.
