3 March 1875: Bizet's opera Carmen is first performed

On 3 March 1875, Georges Bizet's opera Carmen opened at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. Its first audiences were cool towards it, and Bizet died three months later. But its melodies, such as the Habanera and the Toreador Song, made it one of the most performed operas in the world.
