4 March 1890: Scotland's Forth Bridge opens
In 60 words
On 4 March 1890, the Forth Bridge opened, carrying the railway across the Firth of Forth near Edinburgh. Its giant red steel cantilevers made it one of the great engineering feats of its age, and the longest single-span bridge in the world at the time. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
